Uneven Cooling: Why Some Rooms Stay Hot in Qatar

If one room is freezing and another never cools, the problem is rarely the AC unit alone — it's how air is distributed and where heat gets in. Here's what causes hot rooms and how to balance them.

Uneven cooling usually comes from unequal airflow or unequal heat gain between rooms. Common causes are unbalanced ducts, an undersized system, poor zoning, long or leaky duct runs to far rooms, west-facing glazing and weak insulation, or blocked returns. The fix is rarely "a bigger AC" — it's balancing airflow and reducing heat where it's getting in.

Why some rooms lose the battle

Every room gains heat differently — a west-facing room with big windows in Qatar's sun can gain several times the heat of a shaded interior room. If the AC delivers roughly equal air to both, the hot room never keeps up. Add long duct runs and leaks, and the farthest rooms get the least air just when they need the most.

Common causes of hot rooms

  • Unbalanced ductwork: nearer rooms grab the air; far rooms are starved.
  • Duct leaks and long runs: conditioned air is lost before it reaches the room.
  • Undersized system or single-zone control: one thermostat can't satisfy rooms with very different loads.
  • High solar gain: west/south glazing and poor shading overwhelm a room.
  • Weak insulation or air leakage: heat pours in through roofs and gaps.
  • Blocked returns or closed doors: air can't circulate back.

  • Open supply grilles fully in hot rooms and keep doors open for circulation.
  • Use blinds or reflective film on sun-facing windows.
  • Make sure furniture isn't blocking supply or return grilles.
